In the fiscal year 1998 budget adopted last June, the City Council restored $5 million to youth services but did not specify which programs were to be funded. In December, an agreement was reached between the Mayor's office and the City Council regarding distribution of the funds. A total of $3.3 million was allocated to most Youth Development/ Delinquency Programs (YDDP), a 29 percent increase over existing contracts. Current providers of youth services will receive notice of the additional funds in early January and must apply for new funds by January 31. The other $1.7 million will fund support staff to administer the YDDP increase, City Sports, a violence intervention initiative, a pilot youth employment demonstration program, and technical assistance. All new funds will have to be spent by June 30, 1998.
